Understanding the benchmark

What is Visual Memory?

Visual Memory is a position-recall challenge. Several tiles are highlighted simultaneously and then hidden. Your task is to select those locations in any order. Unlike Sequence Memory, this benchmark does not ask you to reproduce an ordered pattern.

How does the test work?

Level 1 shows three targets on a 3×3 grid. After the reveal, select every remembered position. Each completed level adds one target, while the grid grows every three levels. A full attempt starts with three lives, and incorrect selections consume them.

The score

How is the score calculated?

Only fully completed levels count. For example:

Levels 1–7 completed

Final life lost during Level 8

Final score: 7 levels

Mistakes are tracked separately, and the failed level is never added to the completed-level score.

Progressive challenge

Why does the grid get larger?

Each new level adds another target. Increasing the grid after every three levels creates more possible locations without making early rounds unnecessarily dense. The first version grows from 3×3 to a maximum of 7×7.

Reveal time also increases moderately with the number of targets, up to a fixed maximum, so larger patterns receive more viewing time without remaining visible excessively long.

Context matters

Why can results differ?

Attention and distractions. Interruptions can make individual positions harder to retain.

Screen and display size. Viewing distance and grid dimensions can affect pattern recognition.

Device and input. Mouse, touch, stylus, and keyboard activation can feel different.

Fatigue and strategy. Results vary with tiredness, repetition, and whether you group tiles into shapes.

Improve consistency

  • Focus on the overall shape formed by the highlighted positions.
  • Keep the benchmark tab visible throughout the attempt.
  • Use the same device when comparing personal results.
  • Reduce nearby distractions before starting.
  • Wait until the reveal ends before selecting tiles.
  • Take breaks between repeated attempts.

What is Visual Memory?+

Visual Memory is a browser benchmark that briefly highlights several positions at once, hides them, and asks you to select the same positions.

How is my score calculated?+

Your score is the highest level completed fully. If you complete Level 7 and lose your final life during Level 8, your score is 7 levels.

How many lives do I get?+

Every new attempt starts with three lives. Each incorrect tile selection consumes one life.

Do my lives reset every level?+

No. Remaining lives carry forward between levels and reset only when you start a fresh attempt or restart a cancelled test.

Why does the grid become larger?+

A larger grid creates more possible positions as the number of highlighted targets increases. It grows every three levels up to seven by seven.

Does tile order matter?+

No. Visual Memory measures recalled positions, not order. Sequence Memory is the separate benchmark where order matters.

What happens if I click the wrong tile?+

The tile briefly turns red and one life is removed. The remaining hidden targets are not revealed, and play continues while a life remains.

Can I play on a phone?+

Yes. Every grid uses the available mobile width without horizontal scrolling, although denser grids naturally use smaller tiles.

Why did the test pause after changing tabs?+

Leaving the tab during the reveal or input phase cancels the attempt because the viewing and recall conditions were interrupted.

Is Visual Memory an IQ test?+

No. It is a general ReflexMint browser challenge, not an IQ test, medical assessment, neurological test, or diagnostic tool.

Does a higher level mean a better score?+

Within this benchmark, a higher fully completed level is better. Results can still vary with attention, screen, fatigue, strategy, and input method.
