Understanding the benchmark
Visual Memory is a position-recall challenge. Several tiles are highlighted simultaneously and then hidden. Your task is to select those locations in any order. Unlike Sequence Memory, this benchmark does not ask you to reproduce an ordered pattern.
Level 1 shows three targets on a 3×3 grid. After the reveal, select every remembered position. Each completed level adds one target, while the grid grows every three levels. A full attempt starts with three lives, and incorrect selections consume them.
The score
Only fully completed levels count. For example:
Levels 1–7 completed
Final life lost during Level 8
Final score: 7 levels
Mistakes are tracked separately, and the failed level is never added to the completed-level score.
Progressive challenge
Each new level adds another target. Increasing the grid after every three levels creates more possible locations without making early rounds unnecessarily dense. The first version grows from 3×3 to a maximum of 7×7.
Reveal time also increases moderately with the number of targets, up to a fixed maximum, so larger patterns receive more viewing time without remaining visible excessively long.
Context matters
Attention and distractions. Interruptions can make individual positions harder to retain.
Screen and display size. Viewing distance and grid dimensions can affect pattern recognition.
Device and input. Mouse, touch, stylus, and keyboard activation can feel different.
Fatigue and strategy. Results vary with tiredness, repetition, and whether you group tiles into shapes.
